Saturnalia Temple ‘Paradigm Call’ review

If one had to describe the sound of SATURNALIA TEMPLE, it would be like a blend of the songs Dopethrone, Sacrificial Suicide, The Dance Of Eternal Shadows, Welcome to Planet Motherfucker and possibly even a track from ‘...Off the Bone‘, all buzzing along in the inky blackness of an upside down raga paying homage to cult seventies satanic hammond-organ horror flicks. We have to thank once again Steffi from Listenable Records for sending us this incredible album ( many months ago we should add ). Shockingly we’d never heard much from this band before, but the horrible muso types we unfortunately know told us they were on a few good doom festivals ( like this one, as I write this ) were a really good live act, and that they had ‘that video of a bloke wandering around the forest with a squirrel-proof bird feeder‘. On the surface, intelligent and dark music, but is there a sense of humour with this band, we asked ourselves, or are we dealing with something rather pure? Digging into the band’s history, they are complicated fellows, with a dedication to magic, it would seem.

So anyway, here they are with their fourth album, new release ‘Paradigm Call‘ – seven tracks of stoner darkness that oscillate around the standout song ‘Revel in Dissidence’, a lyrical call to throw off society’s norms and embrace a path to power obscured in left-hand-path initiations. The aforementioned influences are present throughout, with more of an early-Electric-Wizard-just-as-they-began-to-strip-things-back-to-the-horrid-core approach that sees them pummel riffs into oblivion as the real world turns to dust and new doorways open….

Paradigm Call sees the band pare back motifs to the most relevant and that is nearly always a good thing for a band seeking to communicate powerful ideas. It will not disappoint existing fans and should certainly garner a few more disciples.
